Mr. Gold, better known as Rumplestiltskin, is a central character in the television series Once Upon a Time. He is portrayed by Robert Carlyle.
In the Enchanted Forest, Rumplestiltskin was a simple man and a coward who was desperate to protect his son, Baelfire. To gain the power to do so, he became the Dark One, a powerful sorcerer. This transformation warped his personality, granting him immense power but also fueling his greed and manipulative tendencies.
His ultimate goal was to reunite with Baelfire, whom he lost through a portal after the kingdom was hit with the Evil Queen’s curse. Gold engineered the curse himself, transporting the inhabitants of the Enchanted Forest to Storybrooke, Maine, where he retained his memories and magical abilities while others did not. He used his knowledge to manipulate the townspeople, always working towards breaking the curse and finding his son.
In Storybrooke, he operated as a pawnbroker named Mr. Gold, using his position to subtly influence events. As the series progresses, Gold's story is filled with complexity, as he navigates his roles as a father, villain, and reluctant hero, driven by both love and a thirst for power.
